OuM Namo Narayanaya!
The Ashtakshari Mantram mentioned above depicts the ultimate bond between Jeevathma and Paramathma. Before we explore this connection lets analyze who is Jeevathma and what differentiates self from Jeevathma. 1) Manam(heart), 2) Degam(body), 3) Indriyangal( sensory organs), 4) Pancha pranam( thread of life) is ephemeral and do not constitute to Jeevathma. Jeevathma only carries budhi (intellect) and all the four factors mentioned above keeps informing the Budhi about its desires and needs. Ideally, intellect needs to be in control of these factors, instead, intellect becomes submissive to these factors and relishes the ephemeral happiness. Hence, Budhi loses control and we get stuck in these worldly pleasures.
The word OuM clearly describes that Jeevathma (makara) belongs to Parmathma (akara) in other words ananya sheshastvam (infinite ownership). The word Namo describes that Jevathma needs to submissive to Paramathma like a bharya to bartha ( to indicate unique ownership and loyalty to the relationship) or a slave to master and described as ananya saranatvam (infinite prostration). The word Narayanaya expresses the feeling of having no other option than Srimannarayana and performing kainkaryam (para bakthi) only towards him as the only duty, referred as Ananya Bogayathwam (infinite possession).
The 3 Steps:
These are the representation of 3 steps taken in Vamana avataram (Ongi Ulagu Alandha Uthaman). As mentioned in the previous pasurams, he creates the universe and undoes it during the pralaya-kalam.
What is the need for measuring the 3 steps? Vamana avataram is very different than others he has taken. In all other avatarams, he appeared as unparalleled power, as though winning dharma was no-brainer. During Vamana avataram, he degrades his nithya-kalyana status to a bramachari status, and goes to Mahabali Chakravarthi to ask for beeksha. Unlike the other asuras, Mahabali was not a dushkrithi, infact, he had done a lot of dhaanam but still he defeated Indhra to gain control over all three lokas and this is the reason why lord Srimannarayana took an avataram to make Mahabali realize what really belongs to him.
When Mahabali accepted to give 3 feet land to Lord Vamana, he started to grow in size which made the 3 lokaas look like three chime balls under his feet. So with a second step he was able to cover everything that Mahabali concurred ( including his head) and everything left in the universe and there was no scope for the third step. So he showed annanya sheshastvam (infinite ownership) with first his step, with second he showed Ananya Bogayathwam(infinite possession) and with the third step he did not take, he expressed annaya saranatvam (infinite prostration) by just touching Mahabali's head.

Uthaman:
Andal takes the name of Uthaman to express the realization of three qualities explained above which are the important requirements for the vritham ( pavaiku chatti neratinal). The word OUM will eliminate theft (theengindre nadellam) meaning, that thought that we belong to ourselves or are independent is a theft. The word Namo will eliminate the deficit ( panjam), that is, escape the deficit of karma yogam, gyana yogam and bhakthi yogam by performing sharanagathi. Like the 3 times a month rain eliminates drought by giving ample time for ground to absorb it ( thingal mumari poudi); the word Narayanaya will eliminate disease, that is, disease of enjoying anything other than his association.
Ultimately keeping the Ashtakshari( valal perum pasukal pole) as prime mantra will lead to prosperity of the land(nīṅgāda śelvam niṛaindelōr ).
